(Washington, DC)—Mark Merritt, president of the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA), made the following statement in response to the State of the Union address. PCMA is the national association representing America’s pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), which administer prescription drug plans for more than 200 million Americans with prescription drug coverage through small businesses, Fortune 500 employers, health plans, labor unions, state and federal employee-benefit plans, and Medicare.
“Last evening, President Bush kicked off an important national debate about how best to strengthen the health care system for current beneficiaries and future generations.
“On a wide range of issues - from calling for a new Medicare and Medicaid commission to how best to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities available through health-information technology to advancing tort reform - the Administration has put forward a compelling agenda that seeks to address the affordability, accessibility, and quality concerns with the nation’s health care system.
“In the coming year, PCMA is hopeful that the policymakers from both sides of the political aisle will find common ground on the health care issues that resonate with working families, seniors, and small businesses. By strengthening the entire health care system, policymakers will go a long way toward making America more competitive in the new global economy and ensuring the health care safety net is secure for all Americans.”
The Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA) is the national trade association representing America’s pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). PCMA member companies provide pharmaceutical care management services to more than 200 million Americans.
